CYBBLE JOYCE HICKMAN OSTER
June, 1996

Cybble was born August 18, 1897 in Moody, Texas, the daughter of William Finis Hickman and Mary Jane Frazier. He was the sixth of seven children. Her siblings were Nellie Presh, Francis Pearl, Joseph Paten, Jennie Belle, Daniel Angus and Carrie Ownice. She and Carrie were both born in Texas; the other children were born in Alabama. They were raised in the Southern Baptist Church.

Cybble graduated from nursing school in Bell County, Texas. She met her husband Earl Aloysius Oster there. On November 22, 1915 they were married by R.C. Albert, an ‘ordained minister of the Gospel’ in Temple, Texas. They remained in Texas until about 1917. Earl was relocated to New Orleans, Louisiana by the Missouri-Pacific Railroad. It was in the small community of Harvey, Louisiana. that they raised their family.

Earl and Cybble had five children, Earl Aloysius Jr. born October 1, 1916 in Riesel, Texas. and Daniel Angus (named for his maternal uncle) born September 24, 1918, Helen born December 22, 1921, Nelda Mary born November 24, 1923 & Joseph Hickman (named for his maternal uncle) born May 11, 1926 all born in Harvey.

During World War II she worked for Johns-Manville; first in the plant and later as their First Aid Nurse. Cybble went on to work at the Southern Shell Fish Company where they canned and packaged cooked shrimp. She retired from there around the age of 73 or 74. As a nurse, Cybble was the in charge of First Aid for the factory but also spent some time helping out in the plant from time to time.

In the absence of a Baptist Church in her community, Cybble hosted services in her home for the local Baptists. She always had room in her home for family and friends. Every Thanksgiving Day, she would host her children and grandchildren for dinner and every Christmas Eve the clan would gather at her house for exchange of gifts.

Cybble died December 27, 1980 in Marrero, Louisiana at West Jefferson Hospital. She is buried beside her husband in Westlawn Memorial Park in Gretna, Louisiana. She was preceded in death by her husband Earl, her children Earl Aloysius Oster, Jr., Daniel Angus Oster and Nelda Mary Bucceri and her siblings.
