- received his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in 1931 at the age of 20, working as a janitor in high school and college to help pay tuition; later served as a captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in World War II
- when he returned home from war, he got a job with The Texas Co., which would later become Texaco; during his tenure there, charged with finding a location for the first oil well in the Gulf of Mexico; while working for the company he met his future wife, Verna Mae Talbot, a schoolteacher in Golden Meadow at the time; married 68 years
- in 1949, the the Hecks and their three children moved from Houma to Thibodaux, where Heck’s sister lived and where he would open his own engineering firm, holding true to his strongly-held belief that whenever possible, people should work for themselves
- an avid story teller, who loved above all talking about his family and his work; recorded many of his life’s stories, even into his old age
- Engineering was his passion; served as the first president of the Bayou Chapter of the Louisiana Engineering Society
