- age 81, a beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, departed this life at 2 a.m. Friday, Sept. 30, 2005, among his loved ones in Baton Rouge. He had been a resident of Cut Off since 1947

- born Aug. 7, 1924, in Whitney, Texas, played basketball at Big Sandy High School in Livingston, Texas, and then attended Sam Houston Teacher’s State College in Huntsville, Texas, to pursue a degree in physical education
- decorated veteran of World War II, served as a corporal in the Second Armored Division of the U. S. Army; participated in the Battle of the Bulge and the D-Day invasion at Normandy; awarded both a Purple Heart (three clusters) and the Silver Star
- during the war, his sweetheart in Texas, Ruth Reaves, wrote him saying that she would like to marry; married for 36 years until she died of a prolonged illness in 1982, yet he remained devoted to her until his death

- age 62, a native of Terrebonne Parish and resident of Chauvin, died at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2005 from an infection contracted in the floodwaters during Hurricane Rita; storm surge from Rita flooded much of Chauvin, including Blanchard’s Elvin Street home Sept. 24; according to family friend Jerri Pate, Larry Blanchard waded back into his house the Monday after the storm struck to retrieve important papers, and in the evening complained to family of a burning sensation in his legs
