- had a deep love and appreciation for all things Victorian, which he inherited from his late mother; as a young adult, he salvaged over 50 Victorian homes in the San Francisco Bay area.; using the decorative elements from these houses, he created a classic Victorian Alameda home, filled it with antiques, an extensive collection of artworks by his many artist friends and family
- while in Alameda, he attended the Maritime Academy, which led to his successful barge and tugboat business in the bay area; company grew to encompass Houma in 1987 and quickly developed a successful maritime repair facility and equipment brokerage firm on his property on the Intracoastal Waterway
