- while in Alameda, he attended the Maritime Academy, which led to his successful barge and tugboat business in the bay area; company grew to encompass Houma in 1987 and quickly developed a successful maritime repair facility and equipment brokerage firm on his property on the Intracoastal Waterway

- graduated from Terrebonne High School and became a registered nurse from Charity Hospital School of Nursing in New Orleans; on a blind date in New Orleans, she met her future husband, Randol Jennings, who served in the Coast Guard; after they married in 1957, together they traveled across the United States to Illinois, Alaska, Virginia, California and Texas, raising two children along the way, Bart and Carla
