Marriages abstracts . . .
Well, I must be losing it!
After several years of highly successful use of your wonderful website, I can't seem to
get beyond the Index page!
Here's the problem, as an example.  I'm looking for the record of the marriage of
Lavina Carolin Lee in Jefferson Co., MO in 1854.  I go to the MO Marriages page,
then on the appropriate Jefferson Co. Cook.  I find Lavinia's name, and page 97.
In the past, I went to the top of the page, clicked on the appropriate grouping of pages,
and immediately found the abstract.  Now I can't find (except sometimes almost accidentally)
the list with the groups of pages.  HELP!  I know it's here...I just can't find it. Jerri
There, at the top of the page where you have always found links to the page numbers,
you find a message that the book has been moved to the searchable index.  The link
there takes you to the Marriage Lookup page.
There is also a consolidated index for the county.  All abstracted years are merged
together.  That also takes you to the Marriage Lookups.
Thanks.  I eventually found it.  But "its" logic and mine are quite dissimilar, and I find the
old way much easier.  :>)  Thanks again for all your work.  Jerri
Not sure what "its" might be.  The search offers more than one option.  Combined
with the full index for Jeffers, Washington or St. Francois, you now have greater
flexibility than ever.  By using the wildcard search, you have a better chance to
detect marriages that may have occurred outside the county of residence.

Bonjour Brian.  Or should I say Hola?  What a treasure your site is.  Although my family
believed for years that Gallianos were originally from Italy, you set us straight.  I am learning
Spanish and loving it!
P.S.--Do we know from where in Spain Salvador Galliano was born?  I'd like to visit
there some day.

I Cant locate marriages on your
You have done a wonderful job of abstracting marriage records for Missouri marriage
records from Crawford, Jefferson, Washington, Franklin Counties, etc.
http://www.vienici.com/abstracts.html and I really appreciate all the work that you have
done. However, since you disabled the links and added the records to the search
engine..... I can not find anything easily since the Indexes link to full abstracts have been
disabled.
Is there a possibility that you will ever re-link from the index list to page number as it was
a few months ago. I work with a lot of researchers of families in Jefferson Co Mo. and have
had reports from them, that it is very difficult to locate marriages on your site now.
Would appreciate a reply so that I can report to them if there is a chance of getting the
records easily accessible again.
Thank you for the email.  The counties that are fully loaded to the database
have full indexes created to help with spelling errors and the lookup page
has a wildcard option on the last name.
The use of the active server page for the lookups has reduced the number
of pages I have to maintain by probably 250 pages.  It has reduced the size
of my site and protects me from information theft by companies that would
take my labor and charge the unwitting for the use.
The conversion is really too beneficial for me to put aside.
As the lookup page mentions, I will gladly consider enhancements to
improve the lookup page.
I hope you will try the indexes in conjunction with the wildcard search.

Subject: Thanks for the mystery :)
I have been researching my family history and wanted to thank you for all the hard work
you put into cataloging Missouri marriages.  You seem to have uncovered a mystery....
My great-great-grand parent' on my father's father's side were Samual Thomas
Bennett
and Jane Jarvis (also known as Jennie).  I have also discovered that Samual
was also married to Sally Ann Jarvis (Jane's sister)...  I found the following marriage
records really interesting....
Jarvis  Sarah A.
 360  Washington County
Mr. Samuel Bennet & Sarah A. Jarvis; married on 13 April 1879 by D. R. Buckley, JP
at Washington Co., Mo.
Jarvis  Sarah A.
 363  Washington County
Samuel Bennet & Sarah A. Jarvis; married on 12 April 1879 by D. R. Buckley, JP
at Washington Co., Mo.
I think these two are duplicates.  2 years later I show Jane (Jennie) not
marring William Beers...
Jarvis  Jane
 32  Washington County
William Beers of Crawford Co., Mo. over 21; Jane Jarvis of Washington Co., Mo. over 18;
28 December 1881 license;  married on 29 December 1881 by W. W. Hopkins, a MG at
my house (no town or Co. noted)
Later I see Jennie (Jane?) Bennett (possible my GGGM) getting re-married,
this one is very interesting because I can place my GGGF (Samual) in Belgrade in 1908
at the time of this death....
Bennett Jennie
 8  Washington County
Harry Calvin of (Valle Twp., Jefferson Co. erased) Newburg, Mo. over 21: Jennie Bennett
of Belgrade, Washington Co.,  Mo. over 18: 18 November 1889 license: married on
19 November 1889 by C. T. Fortune, MG at the bride's Parents,  Washington Co.
Needless to say,  it explains a lot of the awkward silence growing up regarding my
Grandfather's Parents :)
I would be interested in finding out more about the source of the information and if you
know a way I could actually look at the source documents.

My birth name is Oster, too, and I would be very interested to find out more about my

he went to the US in 1907, by then he was 28 years old, he had become an American

I found out all of that through Ellis Island Org. Interesting enough I now found a family with the

Giles Chauvin (French for Charleville) came from AnJours, France to Quebec, Ontario,
Canada and then to Kaskaskia, Illinois and to Ste. Genevieve, Missouri.  I found, on your
website, a listing for my great-grandmother, Mrs. Josephine Charleville.
We have tracings back to 1600, but cannot find my great-grandfather, Peter Charleville.
He was born in St. Francois County, Missouri on May 25, 1853.  He married
Josephine Gorman.  Josephine remarried in 1890 which makes me assume Peter had
died.  My grandfather, Michael John, was born to them in 1881.  He had a sister, Lucy
who was older than him and another sister, Anne Marie, who was younger.
Trying to find Peter's date of death and burial place.  Peter was the son of Michael Charleville
and Louisa Carron, both born in Bloomsdale, Missouri.

National Archives, from Civil War battles to family immigration files
WASHINGTON (AP) -
Researchers, genealogists and the plain curious can now use the Internet to check more
than 50 million historical records at the National Archives, from Civil War battles to family
immigration files.
Before the system became available, people had to either visit the Archives and spend
hours combing through documents or request the files by phone and pay to have them
mailed
``Now, people can pull these electronic records at  their own convenience,'' said
Michael Carlson, electronic and special media records director for the archives. ``It's
totally self-service from your desktop.''
The records available on the database system represent a small fraction of the archive's
electronic holdings. They were selected because of their analytical and statistical nature
- most deal with information that easily can be looked up based on specific names, dates,
organizations, cities or states.
For instance, someone wanting to research a great-grandfather who immigrated to the
United States in the 19th century can choose the series of records listed under ``immigrants,''
enter the relative's name and learn on what ship he traveled, the occupation he claimed prior
to leaving, the date he arrived in New York, and the country from which he left, among other
details.
``It can be another stop in creating your family tree and understanding what happened and
when,'' said Michael Kurtz, assistant archivist for records services.
Carlson said he expects the service will be popular with veterans in particular because of all the
information related to military action, casualties and POWs.
The records in the new system ``aren't a revelation in information, but is it helpful? Absolutely,'
said American Legion spokesman John Peterson after checking out the Web site.
``A lot of people active with the POW/MIA issue complain the government doesn't release
enough documents about people who are still missing, so almost anything they give out
is good in our eyes,'' he said.
Kristine Minami, a spokeswoman for the Japanese American Citizens League, said getting
easy access to government records will provide ``a lot of validation'' to Japanese Americans who
were sent to internment camps during World War II.
The database draws from the records of 20 federal agencies. Most of the information was
created by the agencies to suit their own program needs, without any thought to its historical
significance.
Because of that, some records have typographical errors like misspelled names or an inaccurate
dates. National Archives officials did not correct any of the information to preserve the records'
integrity.
Shirley Langdon Wilcox, former president of the National Genealogical Society, called the new
system an ``extremely useful and exciting'' tool.
``This certainly gives you enough of an idea of what might be available to you so you know
what to weed out before taking a trip somewhere,'' she said. ``Anytime you have a tool that
can make yourself better prepared before you go to the Archives or library, it's worthwhile.
You don't end up wasting an hour or two looking at whether they have something, because
you've done your homework."

Subject: Osters in Tscherwenka
I am attaching a brief file outlining a puzzle about the Osters in Tscherwenka.  I wonder
if you have more information to help solve this.  Apparently, we are somehow related.
I am related to an Oster family from Tscherwenka, Batschka Region of Hungary, which is
now Crvenka, Vojvodina in what is left of Yugoslavia. My records show that my Great
Grandmother
was Theresa Oster, born 15 July, 1876 in Sherwinga, Slavonia, Austria,
which is the same place noted above.  These records also show that her parents were
Adam Oster and Elisabetha Becker.  Her brothers and sisters were: Elisabetha,
Margaretha, Adam, Katherina, and Heinrich).
Theresa Oster married Jakob Rettinger, born 13 January, 1877 in Torshau, Batschka
Region, just south of Tscherwenka.  But they married in Selista (pronounced Selishta),
which has been called Velimirovac, a village adjoining the town of Nasice (pronounced
Nashitsa) in Slavonia (west of Osijek), in present day Croatia.  After a brief period in Brod,
Slavonia, this family emigrated to Detroit, Michigan, USA just before the 1st World War.
I am trying to learn more about the Osters, Beckers, and Rettingers earlier than the dates
noted above.  This note is about the Oster family.
From a list of settlers in Tscherwenka (which can be found at http://pixel.cs.vt.edu/library/odessa.html,
published by the Odessa Digital Library - 16 Feb 2003), published on 14 July, 1790, we know that
there were two Oster families.  Friedrich Oster resided in house number 283, and Jakob Oster in
house number 70.  They were farmers.  We also know that Friedrich Oster had a debt to repay in
1802 and by then resided in house number 375.
From an internet site www.vienici.com/oster/ostejaco.htm, we learn of a line of Osters that originated
in the Rhineland Palatinate in the villages of Linden, Lansborn (unknown to me) and Hermersberg--both
Linden and Hermersberg are about 50 km. east of Saarbrucken.  This genealogical record shows that
a Johann Theobald Oster (b. 6 March, 1780), married to Magdalena (b. 1777) had four children:
Christian Oster (b. 1787 in Hungary), Adam (b. 1798 in Freudental, Bessarabia), Michael (b. 1801,
Tscherwenka, Hungary; d. 1848), and Johann (b. 5 Jan., 1807, Tscherwenka, Hungary).
But this information is at some point incorrect, since Johann Theobald would have been 7 years old
when his first son was born.  Perhaps Johann Theobald's birthdate is correct, since his brothers
were born in 1775 - 1782, but Christian's birthdate might be later, since the second son of
Johann Theobald is listed as born 11 years after Christian, the first born child.  But a later date for
Christian's birth poses problems for the dates of birth of his children, the first of whom (Jakob) was
born in 1808, according to this record.
This genealogical record also lists Johann Theobald and two of his sons, Adam and Johann, moving
to Russia (Freudental, Gluckstal, Bessarabia).  This leaves questions about the other two sons, Christian
and Michael Oster.  Did they remain in Tscherwenka?
Also, is the Jakob Oster noted in the Odessa Library record the same person as the  'Jacob Oster' listed
in the genealogy, an older brother of Johann Theobald Oster?  This Jacob Oster is said to have been
born on 17 November, 1775 at Hermersberg, Germany.  He married Marie Margaret Stadler, and he died
5 August, 1826.  Most likely not, since the Odessa library record is for 1790, when the Jacob Oster in the
genealogy would have been only fifteen years old.  The genealogy has no other listings of Jacob or
Friedrich which could connect the Odessa file to the genealogy.
Even so, the connection of this genealogy of Osters to Tscherwenka has to be a link to the Osters of the
Odessa file and to the Osters in my genealogy.  But until more information is available from someone,
these links cannot be established.

I just found your link while doing some reading on my family's genealogy site.  It's a small
world and so many families' heritage cross and we never know it.  I also lived for about
12 years in Washington County, MO just outside of Potosi until 1986.  I knew some people
by some of your family names, although not well.  The Cadet area is rich in French heritage
of which they are justifiably proud and love to tell their stories.     Thank you, Anne Davis

I was looking through the John George and Jennie Ford Geneology.  I have some questions
as my family also comes from this line.  I have Rachel George married to James Thompson
with children: Rachel Matilda Thompson who married Delaney Washington Hall and
Prudence Caroline Thompson.  The site here says that a Rebecca George married
James Early Thompson with the children I have listed above.  Who is right?  I would love to
know so that there is correct information.  Who may I get in contact with to verify names and info?
I am willing to share what I have in my family research with who ever would like it.

Bergeron Family
My name is Melissa Burgess.  It has been common knowledge in my family that we are
French-Canadian, and bear the Anglicized version of the Bergeron name.  My ancestors
migrated to Connecticut and possibly Massachusetts. As far as I can tell, I share an
ancestry up until the third generation of Bergerons, the children of Jean Bergeron
b. 1570 in Loire.  After this point, I have reached a dead end, because I have no idea
which of his children's' descendants to follow to Canada.  I am sure, however that my
forefather was at least a distant cousin of Barthelemy Bergeron dit d'Amboise, and
lived in Quebec until the latter 1600s.  I cannot move forward in my findings from there,
and going backwards was just as fruitless because of the name change. I owe you a
debt of gratitude, however, because your detailed account of the first few generations of
Bergerons has given me quite a bit more to work with. Thank you for a detailed and
easy to follow website.  Melissa Burgess
